316L Grade Stainless Steel
316L Stainless Steel is often referred to as ‘Surgical Steel' or ‘Implantation Steel' as it is commonly used in surgery. It is not recommended to have a piercing done with surgical steel as it contains a small amount of Nickel which a few people are allergic to. It will also lengthen the healing time thus making the piercing more susceptible to infection. Beware of purchasing ‘cheap' mass produced steel jewellery ( usually from market stalls ) as there can be imperfections on the metal which is an ideal hiding ground for germs and bacteria and can cause irritation. *
Titanium
Titanium is a silver coloured element metal which is about half the weight of stainless steel. This weight difference can be a big advantage for the healing process. Titanium jewellery is an excellent choice for new piercings as it is hypoallergenic, contains only a tiny amount of Nickel and is normally accepted by the body very well. A new piercing with Titanium jewellery will usually heal up a lot faster than with surgical steel. Healing quickly is ideal because the longer a piercing takes to heal the longer it is susceptible to infection . Titanium metal can be anodised to a variety of colours, this colour may fade in time depending on how long and how often it is worn. The thickness of this colour is between 0.5 and 1 millionth of a centimetre !
Zircon Gold (Titanium)
Zircon Gold is made up of a wear resistant, biocompatable titanium nitride coating over a titanium body. For decades the same coating has been used as a protective coating for a variety of medical devices such as pacemakers so you can be assured of the highest biocompatability and the best looking body jewellery !
Gold
Gold is also a very good material for body jewellery and is readily accepted by most peoples body piercing, but it does not work well for everyone. It is softer than metals such as Titanium and S. Steel and some peoples skin can actually discolour the Gold but it can easily be repolished back to its former lustre. 18ct gold is the best choice to be used for new piercings as 9ct gold contains some Nickel and 24ct is too soft. But as we all know 9ct Gold is much more affordable than 18ct Gold ! *
Platinum
Want to be extravagant? Then Platinum, although very expensive, is a very good material to wear in your piercings !
Silver
Silver should not be used through a piercing but can be used for outside decorations such as dangles from rings. Silver may tarnish and will need to be cleaned occasionally.
P.T.F.E.
This product is a form of plastic which is totally inert (anti allergic) that can be worn in almost any piercing. The big advantage is that lymph cannot stick so it keeps itself clean. P.T.F.E. is a great help if a piercing is causing you problems
ie : taking a long time to settle or heal. Perfect if you are not allowed to wear metal jewellery for work, or if you are about to under go an operation and are asked to remove your jewellery which could mean the possible loss of your piercing.
